VIDRIO SOPLADO

TRANSLATION:

Glass was brought [to Mexico] by the Spaniards, who exchanged beads made out of this material for pieces of gold in 1542. The first glass factory was established in the city of Puebla de los Ángeles. Two other factories opened, whose headquarters were in Xalapa and in Mexico City. The first objects that were made were utilitarian, like bottles, cups, bottles, plates, in which green, blue and white crystal were predominant. It was not until 1722 that production of flat glass and mirrors in various workshops started.

In 1834, the Quinard family, of French origin, became the only manufacturer that existed in Puebla, which gave the opportunity to teach the youth interested in this craft. It was at that time and place that the first Mexican glassmaker was born: Camilo Ávalos Razo is considered the pioneer of the art of glass blowing in Mexico.

Don Camilo had three sons who inherited the trade. Odilon Ávalos skill was the oldest, and taught his brotheres Francisco and Camilo. They created the most important dynasty of glass artisans in the country and we owe to them the growth of glass blowing and the installation of other workshops in Puebla, Apizaco Texcoco, Toluca and Guadalajara.

Honorato and his brother Gaspar became associated with Antonio de Antuñano in Puebla, Mexico, where they began the fabrication of crystal with a new technique at a factory called El Solar de Castro, where one of the best labourers, a man with the surname Ávalos, who acquired the business. Gaspar and Honorato also had a crystal factory in Santa Ana Chautempan Tlaxcala, Mexico, and another one in the historical centre of Mexico City, in a street called Carretones close to the Merced marketplace.
